Recharging That Girl Power

It is no wonder so many people were excited to celebrate International Women’s Day yesterday. We deal with a lot of…well, not fun stuff.

Women have had to work obscenely hard to get the rights we have today, and we are working for equality still. We are constantly fighting double standards and we are more likely to be assaulted. We are also, apparently, more likely to get depressed.

An article I have just read, from The American Institute of Stress, explains that we women are twice as likely to experience serious depression as men and three times as likely to experience anxiety orders or to attempt suicide. This is possibly the result of multiple things, including:

  • Hormonal Differences
  • Women having more of a genetic predisposition for depression
  • The fact that women tend to become more invested in personal relationships and, therefore, are more affected when those relationships are disrupted
  • Women are more likely to be afflicted by Seasonal Affective Disorder or SAD syndrome, where the seasonal changes can affect mood.

In addition to these, the article explains that since women tend to live longer, we are often affected by loneliness of losing a partner and declining health.

With all of these factors that can increase our chances of becoming depressed, we really need to step up our efforts to live a peaceful, healthy lifestyle. This week, let’s take time in our day to analyze ourselves and try to find ways in which we can recharge our exhausted minds. With Spring Break around the corner for Purdue students, we are close to a break that will help us push through to the end of the semester. However, something I’ve learned the hard way is to not count too much on work and university holidays. We can’t stretch ourselves too thin, always waiting for a break where we can catch up on all of our sleep and finally rest. Generally, those breaks aren’t as relaxing as we hope.

If we can find ways to reduce the stress and anxieties in our every day life, we can rely less on those rare holidays and begin increasing our quality of life every day of the week.

Overall, our mental healthy is a very serious concern and it is especially so for women. That is one of the reasons I take the information in this blog so seriously. Finding a way to live, consistently, more peacefully and happily, is something I want deeply. I’m tired of being tired and so stressed. Women are fighters, let’s make sure to keep up the fight in all areas of our lives.
